One of the best ways to determine if you have the proper wind resources for a wind generator in your are is to look at professionally done wind speed maps.  Using your own anemometer can be expensive (nearly the cost of installing a wind generator itself), but these professional wind speed maps are already filled out for you, offering you a free look at the wind speed in your area.
